The day I crossed into (ΩKM) Omega Kappa Mu Multicultural Fraternity Inc. It’s a day I will always remember and always be proud of. I was a young boy going on a journey, ultimately by myself, and building myself into a man. The lessons learned throughout my process and to this day are endless and unforgettable. These are the top lessons I learned from my process:
- Life is gonna knock you down, but you get right back up!
Throughout my process, I was challenged mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, etc. Some days, I felt helpless, un-confident, scared, nervous, all the above. But, what older brothers, also know as “prophytes” taught me was to never doubt myself. Fear and doubt are two things that are made up in your mind. They are not real, in any way, shape, or form. So, I had to be confident in myself, and let go of negative thoughts. Ultimately, this lead to me believing in myself, and trusting myself to continue forward in every endeavor in LIFE.
- Determination is KEY.
If I want to go into any job, start any business, and build myself up, I know I have strong determination skills to do so. Throughout my whole process, I needed that determination to finish. Without it, I wouldn’t be proudly wearing those three letters on my chest. So if I go into the job force, I can look back at my process and know that I have that determination and willpower to outwork everyone else and advance in the ranks. Same thing if I want to start my own business, work out, anything you can imagine in life. Just be DETERMINED!
- Leaders in our communities and beyond!
This statement is from a piece of our mission statement and something we strive for each and every day. My fraternity taught me that leadership is not something to be taken lightly. When you are leader, many look to you to uphold a certain standard. They don’t expect you to make mistakes or act widely. So, joining ΩKM has taught me those leadership skills that I can take with me anywhere.
Brotherhood is what fraternities are all about. We stay up to date with brothers both new and old. We uplift each other, give each other advice, etc. ΩKM has also taught me how to have respect for our fellow-man. We never disrespect anyone, we respect others opinions, and we don’t judge you. We accept everyone as they are. This quality trait is valued and essential in life, business, leadership, and brotherhood. Wherever you go, you are bound to interact with another human, so you should be respectful at all times.
So if you’re looking to join a fraternity, or even a sorority, I hope I made your decision a little easier. And if you’re not interested, or just biased against Greeks, I hope I gave you some great insight to what joining Greek life can do for you.
